EDIT: This tactic no longer works as of July 13, 2015 when Alpha Wars arbitrarily and unfairly changed their target rules to target stealth units first (which makes no sense). I can't think of a great reason to buy any stealth units now at all. <sigh>
The following write up was "stolen" from another alliance. I wanted to ensure that a copy of it lives on because I think it is very helpful. Thanks to the original author whoever you are. :
STEALTH ATTACKS
The stealth detector on your base serves a very specific function. If you do not have a stealth detector on your base (and it's not always necessary to add considering the cost), your base will not notice stealth units that come into range unless they attack the base. If a base doesn't have a stealth detector installed, you can mount an effective rapid attack.
With a 'perfect' Stealth Attack, if the base doesn't have a stealth detector, you can park as many stealth units right on top of the base as you can fit as long as you do NOT target or attack the base itself. The base will completely ignore the troops even if they're parked right on top of it. All you have to do then is light the fuse by either attacking the base with one of the stealth units or bringing a unit into range that the base 'detects' and once it's locked on, the base will continue to ignore the stealth units even when engaged.
The base will not ignore the units altogether. Once they're attacking the base, the base will eventually target them but (for some reason) they seem to be the lowest priority in the selection mechanics.
Why is this valuable?
Stealth units like the Comanches & to a lesser extent, the Stealth Tanks have a good attack rating and a horrible defense rating. Normally if they tried to approach a base alone and target it, they would get destroyed almost immediately. If you can get them on top of a base and make sure that the base is focused on another target, the immediate storm of damage that hits all at once is devastating to the base. If you are attempting this 'perfect' form of a stealth attack, 1) DO NOT BRING ANY UNIT CLOSE that might trigger the attack before you are ready & 2) DO NOT accidentally target the base (red circle) with the stealth units or the base will 'recognize' it and attack.
Despite the documented attack and armor unit statistics, some units/groups will only decrease in value at a specific rate. Meaning, for example, base defense units will only deteriorate at a maximum 2.5 (roughly) seconds per gun even if you are hitting them with 100k points a second. The same applies to other units as well. 2 units that fare especially well against bases are the Berkut & F22 Raptor fighter jets. It takes approximately a full minute and 2+ minutes for a base to take out each of those units (respectively). In a 'pure' stealth attack on a base, you would stack all of your stealth around the base including an F22. "Trigger" the attack with the F22 and if you have sufficient Comanches and Stealth Tanks, the base will deteriorate at 2.5 seconds per gun (x46 max = 92 seconds) and you will receive NO losses at all. (how cool is that?) The base will continue it's default setting of trying to kill the group until it's gone (in this case the jets) and will not switch until that time OR you bring any threatening unit into the battle. If you bring ANY other threatening troop into the attack, the base will switch off of the jet and not go back until the threatening unit is dead or gone. A slightly less effective approach is to stage the stealth units and bring 2 Berkuts into range. As long as NO OTHER TROOPS come into range to distract the base away from the Jets, this approach is both devastating and hugely satisfying.
General Note:
The danger on most of these attacks as mentioned in various ways, is the approach. It takes time to cover the ground between the range of the base (24) and your unit's range. The base is most aggressive toward a unit as it's moving toward the base. With stealth units, providing that the base doesn't have a stealth detector, the units can approach, even during the attack, and run no risk of provoking aggression from the base until/unless they attack.
In Conclusion:
These are the basic approaches to taking a base and once you have these fundamentals down, you can mix the approaches with lethal precision. For example, you can start with the stealth approach and if you only have one Berkut, have pans and Howitzers standing by out of range. Once the jet is about to die, roll in the pans and shift the focus onto them allowing the stealth units to thrive and at the same time. roll in Leopards and/or Howitzers now that you know the strengths and limitations of each.
It's not difficult to 'conquer a base' by throwing a ton of troops at it. The goal is to limit the damage that you incur while you're doing it.
